Twenty-seven years ago, Counter-Strike released as a Half-Life mod built by Minh "Gooseman" Le and Jess "Cliffe" Cliffe. Nobody could have predicted what it would become.
From borrowed server time and pixelated player models to sold-out arenas, multi-million dollar prize pools, and one of the most passionate competitive scenes in gaming history — Counter-Strike has outlasted everything. Trends came and went. Entire genres rose and collapsed. CS just kept going. CS 1.6, Source, GO, and now CS2. Different engines, same game. Same dust. Same mid-round calls. Same rage.
And somehow, today it is still the most watched FPS on Twitch, with a major running in Cologne with tens of thousands in attendance. Twenty-seven years in and Counter-Strike is not slowing down. Happy birthday.
